Today marks the official worldwide unveiling of The New Plastics Economy Global Commitment, led by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation in collaboration with the UN Environment, of which New Zealand owned and operated business, Earthwise Group Ltd, is proud to be 1 of 250 leading worldwide organisations to have pledged support.
The New Plastics Economy Global Commitment aims to:
- Help eradicate plastic waste and pollution at the source
- Eliminate unnecessary and single use plastic packaging
- Improve the life cycle of plastic by increasing the amount of plastics reused or recycled and made into new packaging
- Review targets every 18 months
- Publish annual data on progress to drive momentum and transparency
Earlier this year Earthwise backed the New Zealand Plastic Packaging Declaration, making a commitment to ensure its packaging is 100% recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025.
Owner and Director of Earthwise, Jamie Peters, says “We are working hard to reduce our use of virgin plastic. In October we introduced 75% recycled plastic bottles, starting with our 1L laundry liquid and new look dishwash liquid 400ml and 750ml bottles, which are starting to appear in supermarkets now. 75% of each bottle is made from plastic sourced from recycled milk, juice and water bottles. Our aim is to include 75% recycled content into all bottles across our household cleaning range by mid-2019. From November we will introduce 100% recycled bottles across our personal care brands, Earthwise Nourish and Glow Lab”.
Jamie says, “All companies need to take greater responsibility for the materials they are putting into our environment, at Earthwise our commitment is to ensure we are part of the prevention, not the cause. We know we can’t tackle the plastics issues alone and are thrilled to be part of a global effort to find a solution. Stepping up our commitment on a global scale was the next logical step for us.”
