NGATAKI SCHOOL

TE TAITOKERAU - NORTHLAND

Ngataki School in Northland has received funding from Earthwise to further an Enviroschools sustainability project. They are learning about Pingao and its role in protecting the dune systems. Students recently travelled to Rarawa beach where they worked with local Pingao expert Betsy Young, to learn about the history of Pingao, how to identify and harvest Pingao seeds, grow, prick out, and replant at the correct time of the year.

Here at Earthwise we liked how this idea takes into consideration the specific needs of their local area. Restoring sand dunes with Pingao helps encourage insects and birds and is a great learning experience for the students too.
