ŌPUNAKĒ COMMUNITIES KINDERGARTEN

TARANAKI

Ōpunakē Communities Kindergarten’s project was to help support their small town to reduce waste and become more sustainable. Through the help of the Earthwise Action fund, they purchased bathtubs and organised a working bee to convert these into worm farms. Some of the worm farms were placed in their food forest at the kindergarten, and others were donated to schools and ECE centres in their community. Tamariki at the kindergarten were involved throughout the project, discussing and learning about the benefits of worm farms, writing, decorating and distributing letters to the schools and centres, delivering the tiger worms and bedding, and sharing their knowledge about caring for worms with the school children.

This project allowed the kindergarten to build four ‘sharing stations’ to place along the Ōpunakē coastal walkway, to encourage community to share excess produce and plants.
