Wainui Beach School in Gisborne focussed their school-wide enquiry on the little blue penguin/kororā, a project that came about as the school’s office administrator had little blue penguins nesting under her house. They surveyed their community to find out the extent of sightings and visits by little blue penguins, in class they researched their needs/habitat/lifecycle, and they are now creating signage to display on the beach to make their community more aware that we share our environment with these little birds.
This was a standout idea that took into consideration the specific needs of their local environment. The background story of how penguins are currently nesting under the houses of locals, and how a school could come together and not only help the penguins but provide a fantastic ongoing learning project for students.
